John Welch v-card

John L. Welch, Of Counsel
Snapshot:
  • Harvard Law School, J.D.;
    University of Illinois, B.S., Electrical Engineering, summa cum laude.
  • Registered patent attorney with more than 30 years of experience in patent and trademark litigation, prosecution and counseling.

  • Board of Editors, The Trademark Reporter.

  • Founder and Editor, The TTABlog (www.ttablog.com).
  • Co-Chair, Trademarks and Unfair Competition Committee, Boston Patent Law Association.

John has represented clients in scores of patent, trademark, copyright, unfair competition, and domain name lawsuits across the country, and has handled hundreds of opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is responsible for the international trademark portfolios of a number of major companies in such diverse fields as restaurant services, food processing machinery, and computer software.

A Bigger Picture:

John's extensive experience includes counseling, litigation, and licensing in patent, trademark, copyright, and other intellectual property matters. He has obtained numerous utility and design patents for clients in a variety of industries, such as lighting fixtures, electrical instrumentation, ceramic candle holders, food processing machinery, and kitchen utensils.

John is a prolific author on a variety of intellectual property topics, and serves as an expert commentator and contributor to Allen’s Trademark Digest, a leading monthly digest of trademark decisions of the USPTO. His widely-read TTABlog, which focuses on the procedure and jurisprudence of the USPTO's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, recently was selected by Managing Intellectual Property as one of the top ten intellectual property blogs.

John also speaks regularly at intellectual property conferences and seminars. Most recently, he appeared at the Boston Bar Association’s Annual Intellectual Property Seminar, and co-chaired the Boston Patent Law Association’s Annual Review of Trademark Law. As a result of his writings and speaking engagements, John is recognized as a well-respected authority on the law and procedure of the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Immediately prior to joining LL&A, John was Counsel to Foley Hoag LLP in Boston. He is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, U.S. Federal District and Appeals Courts throughout the country, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. John has been a registered patent attorney since 1975.

John has been a sports fan his entire life, and has followed his beloved Chicago White Sox since he first attended a game against the Philadelphia A’s in old Comiskey Park more than 50 years ago. His own baseball career, such as it was, ended a few years ago when he hurt his arm pitching batting practice to his son’s Babe Ruth League team.

He and his sons are avid soccer fans and attend every New England Revolution match. He has been trying to learn to play the guitar for decades, and with his son Peter has formed a band called “Johnny Wonderful and the Commotion.” They hope to record a cover version of the classic, “Secret Agent Man,” once they convince son Jack (unfortunately, an oboist) to learn the drums.
