Laurie Butler Lawrence, Partner
Snapshot:
  • Boston University School of Law, J.D.;
    Cornell University, B.S., Biology.
  • Former Principal at Fish & Richardson, P.C.

Laurie focuses her practice on patents in biotechnology, molecular biology, and pharmaceuticals. She specializes in developing competitive intellectual property strategies that integrate scientific and business considerations into the complex landscape of regulatory and patent law. She has counseled many companies in acquiring and divesting intellectual property assets, and has conducted due diligence on numerous patent portfolios for her clients.

A Bigger Picture:

Laurie works with clients to protect their innovations and competitive position through carefully planned patent procurement, integrated with other strategic and business considerations. These include the development of licensing strategies, analysis of the intellectual property and product positions of others (e.g. freedom-to-operate), infringement and validity opinions, development and maintenance of collaborations, and other relevant patent and business considerations. Her experience in transactional matters includes due diligence and license negotiation, and drafting with regard to patents.

Before joining LL&A, Laurie was a Principal in the Boston office of Fish & Richardson, P.C., a large multinational IP law firm where she was a member of the Life Science Prosecution Practice Group.

Prior to attending law school, Laurie worked as a Research Assistant at Harvard University’s New England Regional Primate Research Center, where she was involved with research to develop an HIV vaccine. She also worked at Tropix, Inc. developing chemilumeniscent technology.

Laurie is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and is a member of the Massachusetts Bar. Laurie obtained her law degree from Boston University School of Law, and a B.S. in Biology from Cornell University.

When she’s not at work, Laurie loves spending time with her son and trying to keep the peace between his roaring robot dinosaur and their dog.
