  • Twelve years of experience in patent counseling, including primary responsibility for substantial client IP portfolios.

  • Seven years as an engineer in software, computer networking and systems engineering.

Ed is a successful prosecutor and well-experienced in IP strategy, having counseled clients with significant and complex IP portfolios.  He is well-practiced in the networking, network management, software patent, business method patent and Internet-based technology fields, as well as in the Internet and casino gaming patents, analog and digital circuits, instrumentation and control systems, encoding techniques, electronic devices, semiconductor design and fabrication, and telecommunications.

A BIGGER PICTURE:

Ed is one of the many people who participated in founding LL&A, where he practices in the areas of intellectual property counseling and licensing.  Ed has also performed a substantial number of studies of Fortune 50 companies’ products and played a significant role in license negotiations with these companies.  Ed also has patent preparation and prosecution experience in many different technical areas including databases, storage technologies, network management, user interfaces, process control, e-commerce, markup languages, and artificial intelligence.

Ed was honored in Boston Magazine as a "Rising Star," a designation granted to approximately 2.5 percent of the best up-and-coming attorneys in the state, in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Prior to joining LL&A, Ed was an associate at another Boston intellectual property law firm where he worked on prosecution, litigation support, and licensing.  Ed also served on that firm’s Client Services Committee, the firm's Marketing Committee, the Marketing Committee for the Electrical and Computer Technologies practice group and the firm’s Technology Committee, responsible for determining firm computing standards.

In addition to his experience as a patent prosecutor, Ed’s practice is built around a strong technical background. Ed has authored several publications relating to ATM congestion control and network management.  Ed also developed and taught a number of training courses in the areas of TCP/IP, Ethernet, ATM, and network management.

Ed has significant industry experience in the nuclear instrumentation and control industries, having worked for General Dynamics and Northeast Utilities.

Ed also has a wide range of software programming experience, having programmed in many different languages and operating systems.  Some of Ed’s developments include database interfaces, data acquisition and conversion programs, graphical user interfaces, a Unix-based machine language compiler, and several video games.

Ed is a devoted husband and father.  When he’s not playing with his kids at home, he enjoys cooking, going to the beach, learning to sail, and playing basketball (not well).  Ed’s personal interests include real estate.  So far, this has been limited to buying, fixing up, and selling real estate at a profit.  When his kids are a little older, however, Ed intends to use his talents to reach the big time – ownership of both Park Place and Boardwalk.
