Bios Gary S. Engelson, Partner Snapshot:
Gary’s practice involves all areas of intellectual property counseling and transactions. Gary has counseled an array of clients on patent, trademark, copyright, and clearance and infringement matters, from start-ups through multinational corporations, in the areas of electrical and computer circuits, the Internet, software, business methods, medical devices, solid state circuits, rapid prototyping equipment and materials, electro-mechanical devices and environmental controls. A Bigger Picture: Gary is one of the many people who participated in founding LL&A, where he practices in the areas of intellectual property counseling and patent prosecution. Gary comes to LL&A with deep technical and legal experience. Gary has more than 15 years experience counseling clients in intellectual property, and in obtaining patents in various technologies and industries, protecting clients' trademark rights, and advising clients when they believe their rights have been infringed. Gary also advises clients regarding copyrights, trade secrets and agreements. Because he worked in industry for ten years before entering the field of intellectual property law, inventors and businesspeople find that Gary quickly picks up their ideas and needs. Combining his extensive industry experience with a solid career counseling clients and protecting their rights, Gary efficiently points the way to develop his clients’ intellectual assets and use them to achieve his clients’ business objectives. Gary brings to his practice a strong connection to the world of engineering. He followed in his father’s footsteps down the path of the engineer, working on projects, tinkering and learning the engineer’s language from his father at an early age. Gary continued to hone his engineering and communication skills as he progressed through M.I.T.’s undergraduate Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department and began his career at Digital Equipment Corporation in Maynard, Massachusetts. Gary spent ten years with Digital Equipment Corporation, as a Design Engineer. During that time, he obtained extensive new product design experience in flexible and hard disk products. In this role, Gary represented Digital at several standards-setting bodies, helping establish and write some of the standards that came to govern the design of 5-1/4” and 3-1/2” flexible disk drives. Gary has: prosecuted numerous successful patent applications of proven value to clients, and developed a strong practice in software, computer-related and electronic hardware patents; counseled clients on pre-litigation strategy and assisted patent litigation teams during pre-trial phases; successfully prosecuted many trademark applications and provided related advice; counseled clients concerning Internet-related intellectual property issues; and drafted and negotiated intellectual property agreements that protect the client and provide a source of income. Away from the office, Gary enjoys spending time with his wife and six (!) children, traveling and dreaming of sailing. For the last, with offices overlooking the Charles River, LL&A is providing a lot of material for Gary to work with. |
