Louis brings nearly 20 years of biotechnology, chemistry, and pharmaceutical experience to LLA. He is involved in comprehensive strategic counseling on a variety of matters, including protection of the client’s innovations, competitive analysis, intellectual property issues associated with financing, analysis and management of collaborations, and opinions. He works with public and private companies of all sizes and stages of development, venture capital partnerships, and non-profits. His clients include a variety of multi-national and leading biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

A Bigger Picture:

Louis’s practice includes all areas of intellectual property counseling, licensing and business transactions, patent prosecution and product clearance, and due diligence, with a particular focus on biotechnology, chemistry, and pharmaceuticals. He assists life sciences clients with patent portfolio strategy and analysis, opinions, patent drafting and prosecution. He has significant experience in patent matters in connection with product planning, including life-cycle management, corporate strategy, financing, evaluation and acquisition of technology.

Louis is also well-versed in the creation of intellectual property protection for advances in many areas of the life sciences including advances in drug formulations and delivery, small molecule design, antibody-based drugs, organic chemistry, drug discovery and development, RNAi, gene and cell-based therapies, immunology, molecular approaches to the treatment of diabetes, trangenics, DNA sequence detection and analysis, chip array technologies, the prediction of protein structure, the applications of lasers in medicine, genomics, and medical and biochemical instrumentation and devices.

Before joining LL&A, Louis had been a Principal for nine years in the Boston office of Fish & Richardson, P.C., a large multinational IP law firm. Prior to that, he was a partner of the Boston firm of Lahive & Cockfield.

Louis is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and is a member of the Massachusetts Bar. He obtained his law degree and a Ph.D. in Biology from Harvard, where he was also a Postdoctoral Fellow in Biology. He received his A.B. in Biology from Indiana University.

Outside the office, Louis enjoys reading, particularly European history. He is a devoted husband and father, and a fan of all Indiana University sports teams.
