A Bigger Picture:

John is one of the founders of LL&A.  His practice in intellectual property counseling includes patent procurement, counseling and licensing, trademark procurement and counseling, due diligence, patentability and infringement opinions, and litigation support.

John’s ability to counsel clients in a variety of technology areas is based on his academic and practical experience.  John received an M.S. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, concentrating in microwave and RF devices and radar systems, and a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, cum laude.  John was a researcher at the University of Massachusetts in the areas of radar systems for measuring the radar cross section of various ground clutter.  John subsequently spent seven years as an engineer, first at Lockheed/Sanders where he worked on designing proprietary radar systems and components, and then as a senior design engineer at Raytheon, where he designed and fabricated a number of monolithic microwave integrated circuit devices on Gallium Arsenide semiconductors.

John studied the law, concentrating in intellectual property at Suffolk University Law School, Evening Division.  He graduated in the top of his class and received commendations for achieving the highest grade in a number of courses.  John began his career in patent law as a Technology Specialist at a Boston intellectual property law firm, where he later became an associate, and then a partner.  His deep knowledge of patent practice was reflected in his starting and chairing the firm’s Patent Practice Committee – a committee which was responsible for formulation of patent practice policy and procedures for all technology groups.

John’s background in the technical and business needs of companies has permitted John to successfully serve a variety of clients.  John's practice includes counseling multinational corporations in the procurement and management of extensive IP portfolios, mid-size companies who are developing their intellectual property positions, emerging companies and individual inventors.  In addition to assisting clients in developing and enhancing their patent portfolios, John has also assisted his clients in developing their trademark position and has provided substantial litigation support as clients’ needs demand.

John is married and father of four; he loves to hang out with his young son and three daughters.  John enjoys most sports; he skis, and plays softball, football and golf.  John helps to coach his son’s introductory hockey team, and has completed the coaching certification courses.  He is on the Board of the Andover Little League and serves as Vice President of the Andover Tee Ball League.  John used to be an avid runner, but now runs leisurely (an oxymoron for some of us).  He also loves to go boating or jet skiing with the kids on summer weekends, and is a certified advanced scuba diver.
