    Dartmouth College, A.B.;
    Dartmouth College, Thayer School of Engineering, B.E.

  • More than 10 years of experience in intellectual property counseling, with an emphasis on patent counseling in electrical and computer related technologies.

Bob is a successful patent prosecutor with experience in all aspects of intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights.  Bob practices in the areas medical devices, computer system hardware and software, semiconductor devices and fabrication, video compression and decompression, and electronic and electromechanical circuits and systems.

A Bigger Picture:

Bob was one of the attorneys who participated in founding LL&A, enthusiastically embracing the opportunity to work with a group of experienced attorneys that also share in his commitment to family.  Bob has in-depth experience in patent prosecution, including reissue and re-examination, and has successfully argued patent matters before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences.

Prior to joining LL&A, Bob was an associate at a large Boston intellectual property law firm where his primary focus was the foreign and domestic prosecution of patent applications in a wide array of technologies.  Bob served on the Training Committee where he was responsible for organizing and frequently conducting the training of associates and technology specialists, the Associates committee where he acted as a liaison between the partners and associates, and the Electrical and Computer Technologies practice group marketing committee.

Before entering the field of intellectual property law, Bob spent almost a decade as a design engineer in the Components and Peripherals Division of Digital Equipment Corporation, being promoted to the level of senior design engineer.  During that time, Bob was involved in the design, test, and simulation of inkjet printers, laser printers, dot matrix printers, daisy wheel printers, and thermal transfer printers.  His hardware experience includes the specification, design, simulation, test, certification, and qualification of microprocessor based laser printer controllers, as well as various printer options, such as DRAM memory options, serial and parallel communication interfaces, hard disk modules, and multi-protocol network interface modules.  His software experience includes programming in PostScript and C, writing portable printer firmware verification test suites, and writing printer driver files to support various network operating systems.  Bob has system management experience on a wide variety of computer platforms, including VMS, Unix (Ultrix, OSF-1, AIX, HP-UX, and Solaris), MS-DOS, Novell, Apple Macintosh, and Banyan Vines Systems.

While attending Dartmouth College, Bob spent a semester studying French language, history, and culture at Universite Jean Moulin in Lyon France.  Capitalizing on his studies in France, Bob made his way (part way) through college as a sommelier.  Bob’s colleagues think he is fluent in French, but they do not speak French at all.  At this point, Bob claims only proficiency in French, since his practice time is limited.

Over the years, Bob has fed his need for speed as a skier, automobile racer, and hockey player.  Bob is also a scuba diver (certified for over 25 years) and tennis enthusiast and former instructor.  At home, Bob is a devoted husband and father; he also cooks, reacquaints himself with French wine, and putters around in the garden.
